DC Motor Mobile Robot : With Nano Controller

I took the Nano controller that I used with the small train from my SuperRobot and just reconnected it to the battery and DC motors on my DCMotorMobot. This is all connected outside the 3D printed shell so is just dragged or pushed along but I wanted to make sure that the motor driver H bridge PCB that I was using would work with these motors, as it didn't work very well with my SuperRobot. As you can see from the video below, it all worked fine.

 

 

I have purchased some Arduino Nano's without the connector pins installed which arrived very quickly so that it will fit into the base compartment of my robot chassis, along with a dual DC motor driver PCB. Unfortunately, at present, the Nano will not upload a programme. I'm not sure why as I have a driver for the CH340 installed and I have selected Nano so it should work. I'll have another look at this sometime tomorrow or later.

    Building and printing is an iterative process.  The more that you build, the better your skill set becomes.  In printing, I find, as soon as I complete a print I discover several things that I would do differently and I am tempted to redesign the part and start over.

     

    The PCB design process is a lot of fun for me.  I see it almost like solving a puzzle or riddle, you just keep moving things around until you find the solution.  I have been using Eagle for more than 15 years.  I have tried a few of the other free or vendor supplied tool sets, but I always come back to Eagle.  Double sided PCBs are really not too much more complex than single sided, plus you get greater density designs having two sides to mount components and run traces.

    It has been a fun build. It is the first mobile robot that is fully 3D printed that I have created. I made it from the 3D printing inwards so I still have to fit the electronics inside - hopefully I'll be able to do this. I'm already thinking of my next build where I will start with the electronics and work outwards to the 3D printed shell.

     

    Then much further into the future I want to design my own PCBs. I have done this before using a package called Proteus but I no longer have this software so I am thinking of using Eagle instead. I wasn't that good at it and tended to stick to single sided PCBs but it avoided all the messy wiring that I currently end up with.

    Glad to see that the motor driver is working well with your motors!  That is always a good thing.  Keep up the good work, as this is already looking to be quite a successful robot project.
