Dr. Eben Upton is an internationally recognised technology leader and visionary. He is the inventor of the Raspberry Pi and the founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation. He is also a Technical Director and ASIC architect for Broadcom. He was Director of Studies in Computer Science at St John's College, Cambridge; he earned his PhD in Computer Science and an Executive MBA from the University of Cambridge.

I subscribe to that. I'm currently experimenting with Chinese PCDUINO and wish having an European affordable open Linux platform of industrial micro-controller for automation. What is important is the time to market when developing (ready to use software addressing the DOUT, ADC, PWM, 1-wire) or more generally:
Supporting the innovative Business Model
- Remote software update capability
- High level programming languages, automated testing
- Secured intellectual property (access to plain control software code)
- Vivid piggy back module ecotope for sensors and actors
- Replication capability in production, swift setup for quick deployment
- Gateways to automation bus systems
Technological excellence
- Low energy demand (deep sleep, buck converter for voltage supply)
- High mean time between failure MTBF
- Low mean time to repair MTTR
- Scalable extensible system architecture
- Stable communication stacks
- Plug and Play Capability, integrating into SOHO networks
High User Acceptance
- Privacy protection of user data and status
- High intrusion security protecting intended device status

But then I got started in the punched card era

Pity someone never really expanded on the 'hole' part for the program information ... much easier to carry holes around.

There is certainly something to be said for limited size, but then we do live in a graphical world.
